At the annual KW Lightning Awards Banquet on Monday May 4, 2009, KW Lightning co-founder Roy Dahl was presented with the Bill “Skip” Johns award by Don Thorne, on behalf of the KW Basketball Officials. The Bill "Skip" Johns award is the highest award the KW Basketball Officials can give to people who have contributed towards encouraging the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship as well as promoting the welfare of the game of basketball in the Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge area. Previous winners have included Court Heinbuch, Bob Hannah and Don McCrae. The award was renamed when presented to Bill "Skip" Johns in 2005. Roy is only the second recipient since the award has been renamed.
Roy has been involved at all levels of basketball. He has coached at the high school, university and club level, coordinated the YBL house league, co-organized the Heinbuch Classic Senior Boys Basketball tournament held in Kitchener each year, served as co-chair of the OFSAA AAAA Boys Basketball Championship held in KW in 2006; and in retirement, he has been coaching with his daughter Amy at Bluevale Collegiate. Twenty two years ago, Roy and his wife Marti started Naismith Basketball Camp at Lake of Bays in the Muskokas for players 8 to 17 years of age. In addition to being a co-founder of KW Lightning and coaching for Lightning for many years, Roy is currently on the KW Lightning Executive and has been coordinating sites for Lightning to host OBA championships. Congratulations to Roy on this well deserved recognition!
