Michigan Tournament, Apr 16-18, 2010

The Major Midget girls had their final tournament before the OBAs and got off to a fantastic start winning their first 4 games. Here are the results from the weekend:
 
Friday at Pioneer High School - Ann Arbor: KW Lightning 53 - Greg Grant Basketball Club 30
 
Saturday at Eastern Michigan University: KW Lightning 26 - Michigan Roadrunners 25

KW Lightning Tournament, Mar 26-28, 2010

The Major Midgets got off to an excellent start to their home tournament with a 57-46 win over the Guelph Phoenix. Kaitlyn Schenck lead the scoring with 14 points, followed by Erin Helsby with 10 and Alex Klein with 8 points. In the first game on Saturday, Lightning was down by 10 at half but Transway who won silver in the tournament pulled even further ahead in the 2^nd half for a 68-41 final. Both Erin Helsby and Kaitlyn Schenck has 12 points and Kailey Deboer had 5. In their 3^rd pool game, KW Lightning beat Sarnia Valhalla 60 to 37 . Lindsay Taylor and Kaitlyn Schenck both had 13 points and Julia Robertson had 10. Lightning then faced the Barrie Royals in a tough quarter final game – their third game for the day. Lightning lost 57 to 37 –Alex Klein was the leading scorer for the game. Scoring was well balanced in all of the tournament games with 10 girls scoring in 3 of the 4 games. Thanks to all the Lightning parents and players for their help timing and scoring games this weekend at WCI, Cameron and Grand River.

 
 

Niagara Falls Tournament, Feb 19-21, 2010

KW Lightning Major Midget girls team had an excellent weekend of basketball capturing the Silver medal. On Friday night, they beat the Barrie Royals 43-37. Kaitlyn Schenck was the top scorer with 18 points and both Kailey DeBoer and Jacqui Rodrigues each had 8. On Saturday they faced the Blessed Sacrament Yellowjackets and came out ahead by 2 with a 39-37 win. Kaitlyn lead the scoring with 14 points with scoring also coming from Jaqui, Kailey and Julia Robertson. In the last pool game, the Major Midget girls had a decisive win over Port Colborne with a 78-57 final score. Four girls had double digit scoring in the game: Erin Helsby with 17 points, Kailey DeBoer with 16, Julia Robertson with 14 and Kaitlyn Schenck with 10. With their perfect 3-0 pool play results, the Lightning girls played the Oakville Venom in the semi-final on Sunday morning and advanced to the final with a 59-48 victory. Again, well balanced scoring was the key to the win as Erin Helsby and Kaitlyn Schenck lead the way with 13 points each and Nicole Barnard adding 12. The Sunday afternoon final against the host team Niagara Falls was a very competitive game and unfortunately the team lost 57-49. Leading the scoring was Kaitlyn Schenck with 17 points, Alex Klein added 8, followed by Jacqui Rodrigues and Kailey DeBoer with 7 each. The team showed over the weekend that they have the talent and heart to compete with any team in the province this year and they are looking forward to their next competition! Special thanks to the parents for their support and jovial conversation during the weekend!

 
 

Transway Tournament, Feb 12-13, 2010

On Friday night, the KW Lightning Major Midget girls faced the London Ramblers. The girls were down by 3 at half but with only 7 players, London was able to grow their lead and came out ahead 62-45 in the end. Top scorers for Lightning were Julia Robertson with 14 points followed by Kailey Deboer with 12. Saturday morning, the girls rebounded with a win over the Ottawa Shooting Stars. Leading the scoring for Lightning was Kaitlyn Schenck with 21, Jacqui Rodrigues with 11 and Kailey Deboer with 10 points. The girls faced the Niagara Falls Raiders on Saturday night and lost 64-47. Kaitlyn Schenck had 15 points and both Alex Klein and Jacqui Rodrigues each had 8. Although scoring came from all members of the team, the Lightning squad was not able to advance from their pool.

 
 

Exhibition Games, Jan 16, 2010

The KW Lightning Major Midgets hosted a mini-tournament on Jan 16, 2010 at WCI. They won their first game against the Brantford Briers 60-49. Lightning was up by 4 at the half and the win was a team effort with scoring coming from 9 players. Top scorers for the game were Erin Helsby with 11 points, Kailey Deboer with 10 and Alex Klein with 9.

In their second game against the Etobicoke Storm, the KW Lightning was down by 5 at the half and trailed as much as 10 to come back and go ahead by 1 in the 3rd quarter. Etobicoke responded in the 4th quarter and despite two threes from Steph Rattray and Kaitlyn Schenck, the Lightning girls could not make a 2nd comeback. Nicole Barnard who didn't play in the 2nd game due to an injury from earlier in the day was missed. All 9 Lightning players scored in the 2nd game. Top scorers were Kailey Deboer with 11 points followed by Steph Rattray with 8. Thanks to all the Lightning parents who helped with the scoring and clean up.

 


 

Exhibition Game, Jan 9, 2010

Prior to the University of Waterloo – Guelph women’s basketball game on Saturday January 9th, the KW Lightning Major Midget girls played against the Guelph Phoenix. Lightning was ahead 17 to 10 at the half and finished with a 42-35 victory. Leading the scoring was Lindsay Taylor with 11 points, Kaitlyn Schenck with 9 and Kailey Deboer with 6 points. The girls play next Saturday at WCI at 10:00 and 2:00 in a mini tournament with Etobicoke and Brantford.

St. Catharines Tournament, Dec 4-6 2009

For their first tournament of the season , the KW Lightning Major Midget team got off to a great start to their season with a 56-51 win over Oakville. Top scorers in the game were Kaitlyn Schenck with 17 points followed by Alex Klein with 10 points and Lindsay Taylor with 9. Saturday morning the Lightning girls beat St. Catharines 62-35 with Katilyn leading the way with 19 points and Steph Rattray with 9. Against Blessed Sacrament later on Saturday, the girls were up by one at half but lost by 3 (51-48). In this game Kaitlyn had 10 points, Alex had 9 and both Steph and Katie Bossers chipped in 7. The Major Midgets qualified to play a semi-final on Sunday morning against Milton but came up short (44-37). In the final game, Alex led with 7 points, followed by Kaitlyn with 6 and Erin Helsby with 5. Congratulations to the Major Midgets for a good start to their season!
