15th YEAR OF KW LIGHTNING IS A GOOD ONE!
This was the best year for KW Lightning. Why? This was our highest medal count ever at OBA Provincial Championships.  We are very proud of our players and coaches.

 

JUVENILE (Bush/Dietrich) WIN GOLD at PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN WATERLOO!

KW Lightning Juvenile (Bush/Dietrich) struck GOLD defeating Kingston Impact 63-49 in the Division 1 U17 OBA Provincial Championship Game!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS LIGHTNING PLAYERS ON YOUR OFSAA 'AAAA' BRONZE MEDAL!

Congratulations to the WCI Vikings Senior Girls basketball team who brought home a bronze medal from the 'AAAA' OFSAA tournament in Sarnia. The WCI Vikings team has 7 Lightning players who all contributed in the OFSAA tournament; Shelby Kurt (#15), Rebecca Dietrich (#40), Nicole Roeder (#22), Alyssa Shortt (#24), Bria Dietrich (#34), Megan Fowler (#13) and Carly Tithecott (#45). The team won games against Aurora High School (53-40), Pope John Paul II (59-42), Ursaline College (60-45) to get to the semi-finlals but lost a heart breaking game to St. Thomas More (56-51) which sent them to the bronze medal game where they played an outstanding game against Westdale which they won (52-39).



 

     
 

Ontario Summer Games 2008


Congratulations to Megan Robinson, Jacqueline Rodrigues, Lindsay Lessard, Kaitlyn Schenck and Michelle Hudyn on winning a Division 2 Bronze Medal at the Ontario Summer Games 2008

 
 

October 2007:
Darcy Berry, a proud former Lightning rep player and house league coach, has been awarded one of Basketball Canada's Provincial BE ONE Scholarships. Of added significance is that Darcy was then selected from all the provincial winners to receive additional recognition as the NATIONAL BE ONE Award winner as the top female in Canada.

Her family and KW Lightning is extremely proud of not only her efforts, dedication and growth as a player, but the well rounded individual who also balanced in academics, school, clubs and community.

 
 AUGUST 2007:
The Ontario U15 Midget Girls captured the Gold medal at the 2007 National Championships at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby BC.


The team was lead by the dominant play of 2 KW Lightning players tournament MVP Jen Lennox and team co-captain Jordan Tomas(pictured right).


The team went 6-0 at the tournament winning games against PEI, Manitoba, New Brunswick and British Columbia during round-robin action.
 

 August 2006:
Rachael Urosevic and Shelby Kurt (pictured right) made the Ontario Women's Under 15 (U15) Provincial Basketball Team. 
They were part of the 12 woman team that represented Ontario at the National U15 Championships in Sherbrooke Quebec Aug. 1-5, 2006.  Team Ontario won 5 straight games beforebeating Alberta 69-67 in the final to take the Gold medal.

Rachael and Shelby played for Lightning's Midget (Urosevic) team in 2005-06.

 
August 2006:
Bria Dietrich and Megan Robinson (pictured right) won gold medals at the Ontario Summer Games with the Tri-County Bantam Development team.  In the tournament, the team was undefeated in pool play, beating St Clair Region (68-47), Kawartha Region (61-42) and Central West Region (62-35).  In the semi final, they beat Mountain Region (75-56).  They claimed the title, beating Capital Region (57-27). 
 
Bria and Megan played for Lightning's Major Bantam (Bush) team in 2005-06.

 
2006-2007
Lightning Basketball is a family affair for
Ron DeBoer who has four daughters playing on four different KW Lightning teams.  Ron also coaches two  of those teams.

Oldest daughter Steph is 18 and plays for Juvenile (Haehn).  Sam is 16 and plays for Major Midget (Urosevic).  Kailey is 13 and plays for Bantam (DeBoer).  Tara is 9 and plays for Novice (DeBoer). From January 1st to May 7th, the DeBoer family has 37 tournaments on its schedule.  On one weekend earlier this year, all four girls played in tournaments in four different cities, while on another, all four played in different divsions in the Hamilton Transway tournament.

"The great thing about what we call the Lightning family is all the parents who helped us out driving our girls to tournaments and practices when there were no DeBoer parents left over to do the driving!" says Ron.

  
March 2006:
Al Haehn won the prestigious OFSAA Leadership in School Sport Award, presented annually at each OFSAA Championship to a teacher-coach who has made a significant contribution to the educational athletic program.  Al has coached the KCI Raiders to many victories as well as the KW Lightning girls’ all-star teams.  Al, together with Roy Dahl and Brian Henry, is a founder of the KW Lightning Girls Basketball Association.

 
February 2006:
Kim Devison, Katrina Sinclair and Lynsey Burnett (first, second and fifth from left in photo on right) were named to the 2005 first team District 8 senior girls' basketball all-stars.
 
 Maddie Soye, Seteena UeberschlagKaila Montgomery and May Kotsopoulos (first, second, third and fourth from left in photo on right) were named to the 2005 first team Waterloo County girls basketball all-stars.  
August 2005:
2005 Juvenile I team-mates May Kotsopoulos and Christine Macdonald were members of Ontario's gold medal winning women's basketball team at the Canada Summer Games in Regina.  May scored 18 points in the 91-84 final game victory.

 
January 2005:
Former players Darrah Bumstead and Teddi Kuehn joined three current members of the Juvenile I team - May Kotsopoulos, Allison Stinson and Kelsey Rodricks - as KW Lightning swept all five spots on the 2004 WCSSA senior girls' first team all-stars.

 
February 2004:
After their team's victory over McMaster, two Lightning graduates, Amanda Kieswetter and Kate McCrae were honoured as graduating University of Waterloo athletes.  Joining them was Leslie Futter, a 4th year player and a coach in Lightning's Sunday afternoon house league.

 
2000:
The Waterloo Collegiate (WCI) Vikings were seeded 7th in Ontario this past November. Lightning players on the WCI team included Lindsay Jennings, Gillian Herman, Laura Strauss, Sarah Sanderson, Lindsay Kurt, Katherine Banks, Terri Alderfer and Ashleigh Jesson.  Lindsay Jennings was also a 2000 WCSSAA all-star and Jodi Wendland was a District 8 all-star.

 
1999:
The photo to the right is the 1999 WCSSAA girls all-stars (L-R) Jenn Kutchcoski, Aaron Yantzi, Eline Kamphuis, Amanda Kieswetter and Brianne Henry. Also, from the 1999 District 8 all-stars, Sarah Lankowksi and Celene Krieger played for KW Lightning. Jenn Kutchcoski  is playing at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) who won the national college championship and was named the 2001 Rookie of the Year for her team.  Aaron Yantzi is playing at University of Vermont and was selected to the 2001 All-Rookie team in the America East Conference.  Amanda Kieswetter is at the University of Waterloo and was selected to the 2001 OUA West All-Rookie team.  Brianne Henry is part of a strong rookie class at Laurentian University.  Kate McCrae is also on the University of Waterloo team. The 1998-1999 Juvenile AAA team placed 4th in the OBA top division.

 
1998:
Jenn Collins played at Wilfrid Laurier University and Trish Gardy played at University of Waterloo. The 1997-1998 Juvenile AAA team placed 2nd in the OBA top division.

1997:
 Andrea Hanson is playing for Queens University which captured the Ontario University (OUA) championship in 2001.

1996:
 Liz Bellingham and Jaime Wendland played on the Wilfrid Laurier University 1999-2000 team.
